Bart van Horck best lecturer 2010

Bart van Horck, MSc, lecturer in Public Administration, is the winner of the Leiden Student Council Teaching Prize. The LSr chose him as best lecturer 2010 for his engagement with his students and for his interactive lectures.

The Public Administration study association, B.I.L., that nominated Van Horck praised him for his sincere engagement with his students: 'There are jokes, attendance is compulsory, concentration is a must.' According to the LSr, 'Van Horck has the talent of inspiring his students, by introducing a high level of interactivity to his lectures, and by constantly raising the bar.'  


Rewarding and inspiring

The Leiden Student Council awards the LSr Teaching Prize every year as a means of rewarding excellent teaching and demonstrating the inspirational talents of lecturers  Because, in the words of the chairman of the LSr, Jaap Schreurs, at the presentation ceremony: 'This university has to provide excellent teaching, and not restrict itself to teaching only the excellent. The aim should not only be to reward those who were already motivated, but to inspire the mass of students.'  

Five nominations

More than 30 study associations put forward their best lecturer for the prize. The LSr chose five nominations, and the final winner, The other four nominees - all female -  were: 

  • Isabelle van de Calseyde, French Language and Culture, proposed by the F.D.L. Gibalaux study association, and praised for her demanding lectures in which practical activities, such as an excursion to Paris, are made an integral part of the study.

  • Dr Ellen Raven, Languages and Cultures of South and Southeast Asia, nominated by the SIITAA study association for her impressive knowledge of her subject, that allow her to bring to life several centuries and half a continent that constitute her field.

  • Dr Yvette Dijkxhoorn, Child and Family Studies, nominated by the Emile study association for her varied, probing teaching that combines film clips, newspaper articles and practical examples.

  • Dr Nina Goosen, Life Science & Technology, nominated by the LIFE study association for her creative and enthusiastic teaching, and her ability to communicate a complex subject to her students.
