Info for first year students International Bachelor in Psychology (IBP)

We look forward to welcoming you to the IBP!  Your academic year begins on the morning of Monday September 4th.  You will receive an email with more details in August.  In the meantime, to help you prepare, we have some important information to share:

 

Pre-arrival information

Please make sure you have completed all of the steps. Take a moment to review:

Leiden University Introduction Event is recommended

We strongly encourage you to attend an introduction week. You can choose the week which fits you best. 
Introduction programmes offered by Leiden University

OWL
Enjoy five days of fun, music, culture, sports, games and making new friends. That's the Orientation Week Leiden, or OWL. The week is specially for new international students at Leiden University, but Dutch master's students are also very welcome from August 28 through September 1.

El CID
The EL CID-week is for Dutch and international students and takes place from August 14 through August 18. You can sign up now via EL CID

4 September: Welcome to the IBP programme | Start of courses

At 10:30 am on 4 Monday September the academic year for all first year psychology students begins with mandatory meetings at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Pieter de la Court building. All first year students are placed in a tutor group and each tutor group has its own schedule of mandatory Work Group Sessions throughout the year. You must attend this event to receive your timetable so you will know when your Work Group Sessions take place in the first week. 

  • 10.30 - 12.30 Mandatory tutor sessions @ Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Pieter de la Court building
  • 13.00 - 15.00 Welcome and 1st lecture: History of Psychology

All course information including textbooks and other literature used is available in the e-Prospectus. An overview of the timetables for your lectures, work group sessions and exams can be found at the Timetable overview (click Psychology).

The remainder of the first week

You will receive your time table and will have lectures on Monday and Wednesdays and mandatory work groups planned throughout the week. Additionally, there will be an information session on Studying in an Academic context to which you be invited.

5 September: Celebrate the start of a new academic year at the faculty

On Tuesday 5 September staff and students will come together to celebrate the start of a new academic year at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. You are cordially invited to join at 16:00 for a drink; the official opening starts at 16:30 in the Central Hall of the Pieter de la Court building

Umail, uSis and Blackboard

In July or August you will receive your ULCN account, which you can use to log on to the information and communication systems used at Leiden University:

  • Umail is your university email box to which all official emails will be sent. We will only send messages to your Umail address. Activate the automatic forwarding service to forward your Umail messages to your private email address, or frequently read uMail

  • uSis is used for the registration of courses and exams. You can look at your results, modify your address and register for courses, workgroups and exams. We will register you for your lectures and workgroups in block 1 in uSis

  • Blackboard gives students online access to the course materials placed in the Blackboard modules by lecturers and tutors. The exchange of messages and documents between tutors and students, and among students themselves is also possible in Blackboard  

Study materials

Books
A reading list per course is listed in the e-Prospectus. Make sure you have the required textbooks and course syllabi before the start of the academic year. Textbooks can be purchased from Study Association Labyrint. Order via the webshop of Labyrint - Books.

Syllabi
You can read more about how to order syllabi and readers on Reader online. We advise you to order syllabi as soon as you activate your ULCN account, because it will take at least 2 to 3 days before you actually get them.
