Prof. Dr. Jan van der Meulen (1951) is professor by special appointment of military-societal studies. This chair has been created by the Koninklijke Vereniging van Marineofficieren (the Royal Association of Navy-officers). He studied sociology at Utrecht University and did his PhD on ‘De verbeelding van de soldaat. Moderne oorlog en klassieke militaire cultuur’ (‘Imagining the soldier. Modern war and classical military culture’) in 1990. He teaches at the Faculty of Military Sciences of the Netherlands Defense Academy. His research and publications focus on the place of the military within society, the recruitment of soldiers, political decision making and public debate on risky missions and the justification of the use of military force.
