Rutger Claassen is Assistant Professor in Political Philosophy. He studied law and philosophy and received his PhD at the Department of Philosophy of Utrecht University for his dissertation The Market's Place in the Provision of Goods. In his dissertation he treated the role and limits to markets from an ethico-political perspective. It also deals with three specific cases: markets in the security, media and care sectors. For this research he was a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan (2005). Before, he published a book called Het eeuwig tekort. Een filosofie van de schaarste (Ambo, 2004), in which he investigates explanations for the permanent character of scarcity in modern societies. His current research interests include these and other economic-philosophical themes, the justification of normative theories (a.o. capability theory) and political philosophical theories (a.o. liberalism and conservatism).
