Veni-grants for Rutger Claassen and Francesco Ragazzi

Both Dr. Claassen and Dr. Ragazzi have been awarded Veni-grants for their research proposals, which allows them to bring them into practise! The Institute of Political Science congratulates them and wishes them the best for their projects.

Dr. Rutger Claassen: The Political Theory of Market Regulation

How should markets be regulated? In an age of unstable financial markets that have grown ever more complex and where failed regulation can have an enormous detrimental impact, theorizing about this question has largely been dominated by an unfruitful polarization between those who display blanket enthusiasm and those who are downright distrustful of markets. This project aims to rethink the question how to regulate markets and overcome the limitations of existing approaches in economics and philosophy. It provides a political philosophical investigation of what can legitimately be expected of a market regulation theory.

Dr. Francesco Ragazzi: The consequences of fighting homegrown terrorism

In a context in which we are told that multiculturalism “has failed”, the fight against terrorism is increasingly geared towards monitoring and curtailing “radicalisation”.  Yet beyond the question of their efficiency, what is the broader social and political impact of these policies? And what are the consequences on integration and multiculturalism? The project will compare the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom.
