Opening Academic Year 2011-2012

On Monday 5 September at 15:00 hrs we will celebrate the ceremonial start of the Academic Year 2011-2012 in the Pieterskerk, Pieterskerkhof 1a, Leiden. The ceremony can also be followed from that time via a live video link.

Programme

  • The opening address, entitled Matching thinking with facts, will be given by Jeroen van der Veer, MSc, former Chief Executive Officer of Royal Dutch Shell and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of  Platform Bèta Techniek.

  • This will be followed by a short presentation on text mining for both non-experts and advanced users, given by Ewoud Sanders, historical linguist, journalist and columnist for several leading newspapers, including NRC Handelsblad.

  • Musical intermezzo by multitalented students Herman Rohrbach (piano en mathemetics) en Monica ten Hagen (vocals en German language and culture) with L'invitation au voyage, Henri Duparc (1848-1933) & Pres des remparts de Seville, George Bizet (1838-1875).

  • Professor Paul F. van der Heijden, Rector Magnificus and President of the Executive Board, will talk on three faces of science.

  • Subsequently, the official farewell of Professor Rietje van Dam-Mieras as Vice Rector Magnificus will be acknowledged, and her successor, Professor Simone Buitendijk, will be welcomed.  

You are requested to be seated before 14.55 hrs. The programme will commence at 15.00 hrs promptly. 

After the ceremony, at approximately 16.30 hrs, there will be a reception in the Pieterskerk, during which there will be the opportunity to personally take leave of Professor Van Dam-Mieras and to welcome Professor Buitendijk. 
  
A simultaneous translation of the ceremony will be provided in English.
