A musical history of 20th century South-east Asia
The 'Articulating Modernity' project of Bart Barendregt en Patricia Spyer received an NWO grant.
Focus
The investigation will focus on the rise of the South-east Asian entertainment industry and the way in which this provides an alternative picture of a turbulent 20th century, away from national and elite histories. This will be the story of artists and their audiences, and how they deal with modernity in everyday life via popular music, media technologies and life styles.
